Sancho I called the colonist ( Dom Sancho I or o Povoador ) (born November 11, 1154 in Coimbra ; † March 26, 1211 ibid) was the second king of Portugal from the House of Burgundy .

Life

Sancho I was born the son of King Alfonso I and Queen Mathilde . After the death of his father in 1185 he ascended the throne himself. He brought the Cistercian monks into the country, who were to colonize the areas recaptured by the Moors , and in 1189 he conquered Silves , the capital of the Moors. However, most of these conquests were lost again the next year. About disputes about the validity of the marriage of his daughter Theresa to King Alfonso IX. of León , as well as feudal rights , began a dispute with the Catholic Church , which imposed the interdict on Portugal in 1195 . The dispute between the monarchy and the church was to last almost two hundred years and, to a certain extent, represents the Portuguese version of the investiture dispute .
