Mathilde of Savoy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mathilde Countess of Savoy and Maurienne (* 1125 , † November 4, 1157 in Coimbra ) was a Savoy noblewoman and queen of Portugal from 1146 until her death .

Mathilde was born as the daughter of Count Amadeus III. von Savoyen (* 1092, † 1148) and his wife Mathilde von Albon. Her grandmother, Gisela of Burgundy, came from the family of the Burgundian rulers, whose branch line provided the kings of Portugal from 1139. She had several siblings: Agnes of Savoy, who was married to Wilhelm I of Geneva; Adèle of Savoy, wife of Humbert III. de Beaujeu ; Humbert III. Count of Savoy , who was married to Gertrud von Flanders and then to Beatrice de Mâcon.

Mathilde was largely related to Alfons I Henriques , the first king of Portugal, whom she married in 1146. Through this marriage she became Queen of Portugal (as a wife, not as a ruler in her own right).
