Berengaria of Portugal
Berengaria (* 1194 ; † 1221 ) was Queen of Denmark .
She was the daughter of the Portuguese King Sancho I and his wife Dulce of Barcelona . Her brother Ferdinand was Count of Flanders from 1212 through his marriage to Johanna von Flanders . Berengaria stayed with him before their wedding.
In 1214 she married King Waldemar II of Denmark, son of King Waldemar I the Great and his wife Sophia of Minsk . The couple had four children:
- Erik IV (1216-1250)
- Sophia (1217–1247) ∞ John I of Brandenburg
- Abel (1218–1252) ∞ Mechthild von Holstein
- Christoph I (1219–1259) ∞ Margarete Sambiria of Pomerania
Berengaria is buried in St. Bendts Church in Ringsted , at the side of her husband and her predecessor, Waldemar's first wife Dagmar . In folk ballads, the two women were portrayed as opponents and opposites: while Dagmar appears mild and kind, Berengaria is said to have been beautiful, but greedy and hard-hearted.
