Mechthild von Holstein (* 1220 or 1225 ; † 1288 in Kiel ) was Queen of Denmark from 1250 to 1252 .

Life

Mechthild - daughter of Adolf IV. Von Holstein - married Abel in 1237 , who was King of Denmark from 1250 to 1252. There were four children from the marriage:

After Abel's death in 1252, Mechthild von Holstein and Birger Jarl got married - both in a second marriage - in Bjälbo (Sweden). Christina Birgersdotter came from the marriage.

In a deed dated May 12, 1260, Mechthild von Holstein, together with her two sons Erich I and Abel Abelsen, pledged their property in Stapelholm , Fræzlæt , Schwansen and the Jarnwith crown estate to the Holstein counts Johann I and Gerhard I , their brothers. The aforementioned document also mentions the Rendsburg fortress , which Mechthild received as a dowry.

Mechthild von Holstein is buried in Varnhem's monastery church in Varnhem near Skara / Västergötland in Sweden .
