Gerhard I (* 1232 ; † December 21, 1290 ) was the only Count of Holstein-Itzehoe .

Life

He was the second son of Adolf IV von Schauenburg and Holstein and Heilwig von der Lippe . After his father entered the Franciscan Marian Monastery he founded in Kiel on August 13, 1239 , Gerhard ruled together with his older brother Johann , initially under the tutelage of their uncle, Duke Abel of Schleswig . When Adolf IV died in 1261, Johann and Gerhard divided Holstein and Stormarn into the counties Holstein-Kiel and Holstein-Itzehoe , with Gerhard taking over the part with Stormarn, Plön and the county of Schauenburg , the ancestral seat of the family, and residing in Itzehoe and Johann the part with Kiel , Wagrien , Ostholstein . There he systematically expanded the rule with clearing settlement, so that several places were created. In 1255 the brothers concluded a trade agreement with Lübeck . Gerhard got Rendsburg from his brother Johann, which he won back from Denmark and ceded Segeberg with the Siegesburg . He helped the nephews in Schleswig against Denmark and thus secured the Eckernförde area . He was victorious in the Battle of Lohheide in 1262 . When his brother died in 1263, he became the guardian of the sons of Johann Regent von Kiel and Segeberg. He argued a lot with the archbishops of Bremen , Lübeck and the landed gentry and expanded the administration.

When Gerhard I died, his sons Gerhard II, Adolf VI. and Heinrich divided the county of Holstein-Itzehoe into the three counties of Holstein-Plön , Holstein-Schauenburg and Holstein-Rendsburg before 1295 .
