Holstein-Kiel
Holstein-Kiel was a line of the noble family of Schauenburg and Holstein from 1261 to 1316 , which died out in 1321. From 1316 the Counts of Holstein-Plön also ruled the Kiel territory.
history
The counties of Holstein and Stormarn were ruled by Adolf IV von Schauenburg and Holstein until 1238 . He retired to the monastery, after which his sons Johann I and Gerhard I ruled together in Holstein. In 1261 these divided the county, with Johann ruling in Kiel , thus establishing the Holstein-Kiel line, and Gerhard ruling in Itzehoe , thereby founding Holstein-Itzehoe . The residence of Holstein-Kiel was Kiel Castle , which was built by Adolf IV in 1242 .
Before 1295 Holstein-Itzehoe was divided into Holstein-Plön , Holstein-Pinneberg and Holstein-Rendsburg .
In 1316 the County of Holstein-Kiel came to the Count of Holstein-Plön, when Johann II was deposed.
In 1390 the last Count of Holstein-Plön died childless and with it that of Holstein-Kiel. Both territories went over to the Holstein-Rendsburg line .
Count of Holstein-Kiel
- 1261–1263 Johann I (* 1229; † 1263)
- 1263–1273 Adolf V the Pomeranian (* 1252; † 1308), from 1273 Count of Holstein-Segeberg
- 1263–1273 Albrecht I (* ca. 1255, † 1300) as a minor co-count, then canon in Hamburg and from 1283 cathedral provost in Hamburg
- 1263–1316 John II the One-Eyed (* 1253; † 1321), deposed
- 1316-1359 John III. der Milde (* approx. 1296; † 1359), from 1312 Count of Holstein-Plön
- 1359–1390 Adolf VII. (* Approx. 1329; † 1390), also Count of Holstein-Plön
After the death of Johann I, his sons Adolf V and Johann II ruled together in Holstein-Kiel. The third brother Albrecht I was resigned and a canon in Hamburg. In 1273 Adolf V and Johann II divided Holstein-Kiel, with Johann II continuing to rule from Kiel; Adolf V received the Siegesburg as the residence of the County of Holstein-Segeberg . When Adolf V died in 1308 without a male heir, Holstein-Segeberg fell back to Holstein-Kiel.
The sons of John II died in 1313 and 1315 under unexplained circumstances. Now without an heir, Johann II was deposed in 1316 . Successor was Johann III. , a son of Gerhard II von Holstein-Plön .
When Adolf VII died in 1390 without an heir, Holstein-Kiel and Holstein-Plön fell to Count Nikolaus von Holstein-Rendsburg († 1397) and his nephew Count Gerhard VI. of Holstein-Rendsburg († 1404).
