Holstein-Rendsburg is the name of a line of the Schauenburger that existed from 1290 to 1459 .
Birth and fall of the county
The Schauenburgers ruled Holstein from 1110/1111. When Count Gerhard I von Holstein-Itzehoe died in 1290 , Holstein and Stormarn divided his share into three parts before 1295. The counties Holstein-Plön , Holstein-Pinneberg and Holstein-Rendsburg came into being.
The counts listed below ruled and the last count of Holstein-Rendsburg, Adolf VIII, died in 1459. The Schauenburg lines were almost extinct, only the Holstein-Pinneberg line still existed, their count was Otto II. However, he could inherit Holstein and Stormarn not enforce.
Instead, in 1460, King Christian I of Denmark , a nephew of Adolf VIII, whom he had helped to the Danish throne, was elected as the new ruler of the Duchy of Schleswig and the County of Holstein .
The Rendsburg Castle was demolished in 1718.
