The county of Holstein-Pinneberg existed from 1290 to 1640.
Birth and fall of the county
Holstein-Pinneberg was a small territory that was created in 1290 after the death of Gerhard I through the division of the County of Holstein-Itzehoe . This is how the Pinneberger line of the Counts of Schauenburg and Holstein came into being , called Holstein-Pinneberg or Holstein-Schauenburg . The Schauenburgers (later called Schaumburger on the Weser) ruled over the Grafschaft Schaumburg (from 1807 principality) and Holstein - Pinneberg .
Pinneberg Castle was replaced by a Renaissance castle in 1472, which was demolished in 1720 after being damaged in the Thirty Years' War and replaced by today's Drostei Pinneberg from 1765 .
After the Schaumburgs died out in 1640 (the other lines in Holstein had already died out by 1459), the Grafschaft Schaumburg was split up and the County of Holstein-Pinneberg was incorporated into the Duchy of Holstein , which had meanwhile been upgraded to a duchy . The county of Rantzau was formed from the northern third in 1650 .
