Holstein-Plön is a line of Schauenburger that in Holstein and Stormarn since 1110 / 11 prevailed. It was created before 1295 when the territory was divided after the death of Count Gerhard I von Holstein-Itzehoe († 1290) when the county of Holstein-Itzehoe was divided into the counties of Holstein-Plön, Holstein-Pinneberg and Holstein-Rendsburg . The residence was Plön Castle .

The following counts ruled Holstein-Plön:

After the death of Gerhard II, Gerhard IV and his younger half-brother Johann III ruled . together via Holstein-Plön. In 1314 Gerhard IV sold his territory to Johann III, who became the sole Count of Holstein-Plön. He conquered together with Gerhard III. Holstein-Kiel too. When the Plön line died out in 1390, Holstein-Plön and Holstein-Kiel fell to Count Nikolaus von Holstein-Rendsburg († 1397) and his nephew Count Gerhard VI. of Holstein-Rendsburg († 1404).
