Eichgraben is a market town with 4652 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Lower Austrian district of St. Pölten-Land , a member of the Wienerwald Initiative Region and a certified climate alliance community .

geography

View from the train station towards the town center. At the top right is the Art Nouveau ballroom, in the middle the Protestant Michaelskapelle, behind it the church tower of the Vienna Woods Cathedral.

Geographical location

The market town is located on the northern foothills of the Vienna Woods on the Westbahn (Alte Westbahn, route 1) 32.4 km west of the federal capital Vienna and 31.8 km east of the state capital St. Pölten (measured from the city center). The Steinhäusl motorway junction ( A1 - A21 ) is largely located in the municipality. The closest town is Neulengbach about 10 km west, where the responsible district court is located. Eichgraben borders on Altlengbach , Furth (municipality of Maria Anzbach ), Knagg (municipality of Maria Anzbach) and Rekawinkel (municipality of Pressbaum ).

Community structure

The municipality includes the following six localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

  • Eichgraben (251)
  • Hinterleiten (1324)
  • Hutten (1443)
  • Ottenheim (943)
  • Stone (588)
  • Winkl (103)

The community consists of the cadastral community Eichgraben.

Hydrology

Eichgraben lies west of the Rekawinkler Berg watershed and is drained by the Nagelbach and Anzbach, which flows into the Große Tulln . Smaller tributaries are Dreiwasserlbach, Hummelbach, Paukhofgraben, Schattaubach, Waldbadbach and Wintengraben. An overflow of the second Viennese spring water pipeline on the Weiserwiese is used by a homestead.

climate

In Eichgraben there is predominantly a moderate transitional climate, which is influenced by the Pannonian climate and, due to its location in the Vienna Woods, has above-average humidity. Due to the hilly topology of the region, there is usually a light to medium-strong west wind in Eichgraben.

history

antiquity

Border between the Roman provinces of Noricum and Pannonia

In ancient times the area of today's Eichgraben belonged to the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum , after its incorporation into the Roman Empire to the province of Noricum . In the 1st or 2nd century, the deceased who had been cremated in seven barrows were buried in burial chambers on a Roman path on the outskirts above Finsterleitenstrasse (Stein district) 100 m north of the "Römerstern". The scanty grave goods were salvaged for the Lower Austria State Museum in 1896 and 1929 and indicate a poor Celto-Illyrian population. Two hills of this tumulus group are still recognizable on today's “Eichgrabner Höhenwanderweg”. The reconstruction of such a tumulus is in the Vienna Woods Museum Eichgraben . It is not clear whether the current municipal area was touched by other traffic routes during the Roman era. In any case, the border between the provinces of Noricum and Pannonia lay on the main ridge of the Vienna Woods (Cetius Mons). This border has been preserved to this day as the border between the Catholic dioceses of St. Pölten, to which Eichgraben belongs, and Vienna, to which Rekawinkel belongs.

At the time of the Great Migration , the Vienna Woods and thus also the municipal area of today's Eichgraben was first the border area of the Huns and later the Avar Empire.

middle Ages

In the 11th century, the Eichgraben area was settled from Neulengbach and Anzbach. The earliest farms were on the heights of Knagg, Stein, Ottenheim and Gschaid. Small settlements emerged through the division of farms, about which the land registers of the Neulengbach and Wasen rule provide information.

On August 24, 1345 called "Aichgrawe" appear (one overgrown with Eichenwaldgraben - Eichgraben), "Utenhaim" (home of Otto - Ottensheim) and "Stelz Hof" in a deed of foundation on which Gotfried the Wirsching inches of Chirchsteten written and was sealed. This document from the St. Andrä an der Traisen Abbey can be viewed in the original in the archive of the Herzogenburg Abbey , as well as digitally in the Flash Viewer on the Certificate page : Documents St. Andrä an der Traisen (998-1776) 1345 VIII 24 in the Monasterium European document archive .net .

Around 1348 the plague first reached the Nöstach-Alland-Pressbaum-Greifenstein line and halved the resident population. A 10 to 20 km wide strip west of this line was still uninhabited until at least 1400 (see History of the Vienna Woods ). War and mercenary gangs raged in Lower Austria. Various diseases that can be traced back to poor hygienic conditions killed a considerable part of the population. The child mortality rate was particularly high as wars left hardly any food.

Early modern age

On "Erchtag" (dialect for Tuesday ), a weekly market was held below Neulengbach Castle and the surrounding villages were supplied with the products of the craftsmen of the market. A settlement of craftsmen in the villages was prevented as far as possible. A toll was charged for the delivery and removal of goods. On April 15, 1516, Emperor Maximilian I allowed the citizens of Neulengbach to hold two annual markets.

In the course of the first Turkish siege of Vienna in 1529 there was arson. Among other things, the "Streitgerbauer" (today: Singerhof, on Hochstrass, south of the autobahn) burned down.

On Tuesday, September 15, 1590, around midnight, there was a millennium quake with the epicenter Neulengbach , which in Vienna, 40 km away, collapsed the towers of the Michaelerkirche and the Schottenkirche and killed people. The strongest earthquake that Vienna and Lower Austria have ever suffered, probably also brought horror and destruction to the thinly populated area of today's Eichgraben, 10 km from the epicenter.

Until 1701, the Wienerwald was a manorial forest for about 500 years and was therefore not accessible to the public, which was not easily possible due to its primeval forest character. In 1572, Emperor Maximilian II ordered a documentary recording of the area in the form of a forest book for the first time; The “Kayserliche Waldambt” in Purkersdorf Castle was responsible . A number of wood-cutter settlements were built in the Vienna Woods. One of these hut settlements is the namesake for the district "Hutten". In the course of time, today's Eichgraben developed on parts of the “Anzbacher Amt” of the Vienna Woods, which encompass a total of 12 offices. Apart from the effects of the Thirty Years War (1618–1648) and roaming Tatars and irregular soldiers, so-called Akindsi during the Second Turkish Siege of Vienna (1683), the Vienna Woods experienced a calm development in the 17th century.

The plague raged in Eichgraben from 1712 to 1715, killing a third of the population. The dead were buried in plague pits. One pit was located in the area of the former monastery in the district of Stein, another, not yet found pit, is said to be above an inn on the main road. After the high population losses caused by the plague and Turkish wars, settlers from all parts of the German-speaking area were brought to the Eichgraben area.

Modern history and contemporary history

Narrow-gauge tank locomotive Yv 598.01 as a monument below the railway viaduct

As a result of the revolution of 1848 , the rural population's dependence on the manor was lifted. The Eichgraben area became independent from the Imperial and Royal Forest Authority in Purkersdorf Castle and from the Neulengbach manor. From 1850 Eichgraben had a freely elected mayor, but still belonged to the municipality of Maria Anzbach .

The upswing of the place began in 1851 with the construction of the Empress Elisabeth Railway , which spans the "Graben" in an omega-shaped loop with the 26.4 m high Eichgrabner Railway Viaduct . After commissioning on December 15, 1858, the builders' huts were followed by the many preserved villas of summer visitors from Vienna from around 1880 . The station district with its excursion restaurants became the social center. In 1883 a return ticket Vienna - Eichgraben cost 180 kreuzers in 1st class , 140 kreuzers in 2nd class and 90 kreuzers in 3rd class (100 kreuzers = 1 gulden ≈ daily wage of a Viennese factory worker or craftsman) . According to the timetable, one of the daily 7 to 8 trains took between 57 and 68 minutes for the 30 km.

On correspondence cards from around 1910, “Eichgraben an der Westbahn” is often shown as a summer break . Eichgraben has been an independent municipality since 1923.

The November pogroms of 1938 are recorded in the chronicle of the Gendarmeriepostenkommando Eichgraben as follows: "On behalf of the St. Pölten District Commission, 28 Jews were arrested on November 10, 1938 by Rev. Insp. Josef Waiz and transferred to the district court in Neulengbach." three Russian soldiers were murdered in Eichgraben and their bodies buried in the forest above today's elevated tank. No remains have been found so far. According to reports from contemporary witnesses, parish provisional chaplain Josef Seiwald is said to have hidden two members of the White Rose resistance group in the Schattau district between 1943 and 1944.

From the middle of the 20th century, more and more second homes moved from Vienna. Due to the rapidly increasing population, Eichgraben was made a market in 1973. Today Eichgraben is part of the suburb of the metropolitan region of Vienna . In order to maintain the villa structure and to prevent the uncontrolled construction of large-volume buildings with a large number of apartments in a building (at least more than three apartments), a limited building ban was first issued and the spatial planning was subsequently changed. One consequence of the population growth is increased traffic. In order to encourage commuters to switch to public transport, the former Gasthof Son near the train station was demolished and a two-story park-and-ride facility with 236 parking spaces for cars and around 20 two-wheeled vehicles was built together with ÖBB and the state of Lower Austria. Around 900 passengers daily use the train to get to work.

Religions

The majority of the population is Roman Catholic . Services are regularly held in the two Roman Catholic and Protestant churches. (May) devotions and field masses are occasionally celebrated at the forest chapel in Ottenheim. There is also an Islamic community that officially set up a prayer room in a single-family house in the Hutten district in spring 2007. Jehovah's Witnesses meet in the Kingdom Hall, which is located in Rekawinkel 150 m from the Eichgraben parish boundary.

Baden and Neulengbach 1876 Francisco-Josephinian Landesaufnahme special map 1: 75.000

Around 1830 the village of Eichgraben was subordinate to the Imperial Forest Office in Purkersdorf Castle, all other current districts were under the rule of Neulengbach - whereby "subjects" were also owned by other rulers (see manorial rule in table). For Eichgraben, the kk forest authority was Purkersdorf , for all other districts the authority of Neulengbach was district court, conscription and local authority. The next post station was Sieghartskirchen, several hours' walk away . All districts with parish and school belonged to Anzbach . In the case of personal taxes (body taxes), children (mostly under 12 years of age) were generally excluded, so the school-age children were not included in the number of residents and B. not even collected in the village of Eichgraben. There was a grinding mill in Eichgraben (today Hauptstrasse 93 opposite the confluence with Wallnerstrasse). In Hutten there were the Liamühle (today at Wienerstr. 83), the Sturmmühle (today Wiener Straße 17), 2 taverns and where the streets of Alt- and Neulengbach merged at the “Wirthshaus Rußhof” (today the roundabout), two “Mauthen”.

Gastronomy and accommodation

The number of catering establishments has decreased in the last few decades. There is currently a coffee house, a pastry shop, three inns, two canteens, a pub and a hotel.

If Eichgraben was a popular summer resort for the Viennese 120 years ago, today hotels and guesthouses rely on bus and individual tourism. Visitors to Vienna from the Netherlands and the new German federal states, for whom accommodation in Vienna is too expensive and too loud, particularly appreciate the proximity to the city.

Two medically certified foot care companies are also worth mentioning.

Local supply

In the 1980s, Eichgraben still had four supermarkets, two bakeries, three butchers, a fruit and vegetable shop, two small general stores and two drug stores, but the number of local suppliers has since decreased significantly. Today (as of March 2013) there is a post office, a tobacco shop, two bank branches, a supermarket, a pharmacy, a bakery, an organic farm shop and a gas station in Eichgraben. A monthly market takes place on the station forecourt on the 1st Saturday of each month from April to December. In addition, the community is supplied with various delivery services for baked goods, frozen food, organic vegetables and drinks. The kiosk in the train station, which reopened in October 2010, was closed again after a short time.

In October 2009, the construction of a new community center in a central location began, which was opened in 2011. This building houses the municipal office, a citizen service, the parent advisory service, a club room, the municipality archive, the municipality library and a café-pastry shop.

Wired networks

The electricity and gas network is operated by the network operator EVN Netz GmbH in the regulated area. When the gas lines were laid, fiber optic cables were pulled along by a subsidiary of EVN AG , which means that in addition to the ADSL fixed network of A1 (Telekom Austria Group), fiber optic connections for HD TV , Internet and telephony from EVN subsidiary kabelplus GmbH are largely possible.

The municipal water network draws the water from EVN Wasser Gesellschaft mbH from a well field in the Böheimkirchen region , which supplies very hard water through the flysch zone that predominates there . Waste water is discharged separately from precipitation water (rain) into the local sewer system, mechanically and biologically cleaned by the sewage treatment plant of the Anzbach-Laabental waste water association in Markersdorf and discharged into the Große Tulln .

The community is connected to the ÖBB rail network through the Eichgraben-Altlengbach station, where S50 S-Bahn trains stop every hour and REX trains in the direction of Wien Westbahnhof or St. Pölten Hauptbahnhof Alte Westbahn (route 1) stop every hour . Due to the immediate proximity of the Westautobahn A1-AT.svg (Exit 23, Exit Pressbaum or Exit 35, Exit Altlengbach) and the Vienna Outer Ring Autobahn (Exit 3, Exit Hochstraß ), the community is also easily accessible for car traffic and is also served by several regular buses. With the commissioning of the Neue Westbahn (route 30) , the high-performance railway line across the Tullnerfeld , on December 9, 2012, long-distance traffic was reduced on the Alte Westbahn (route 1) and the regional traffic range expanded. The railway stop is called Eichgraben-Altlengbach and has a large Park & Ride facility. Several taxi companies bring passengers to remote parts of the city around the clock. The collective call taxi has been replaced by a voucher system in which recipients of heating cost allowances or the needs-based minimum income per trip with taxi pleyer are subsidized by the municipality with EUR 2.50.
