Friedrich Wilhelm Ritter Cavallar von Grabensprung (born August 3, 1904 near Pola , Margraviate of Istria ; † 1989 in Vienna , Austria ), after the nobility in Austria was abolished in 1919 only Fritz Cavallar , was an old Austrian engineer , inventor , officer and Motor vehicle expert .

biography

Cavallar was born into an officer's family. He was the youngest of four children of Eduard Cavallar von Grabensprung , a member of the Austrian KuK Navy . He studied engineering and mainly specialized in vehicle technology.

In the interwar period , especially during the period of the corporate state , Cavallar had some of his inventions patented. His father Eduard had filed a first patent in 1910 and could have had an influence on the inventive development of his son Fritz. Fritz's patents were later used by companies such as Schlafhorst & Co. W. (1940), Ford (1957) or Bosch-Siemens Hausgeräte (1998) for further patents .

During the Second World War he took part in the Africa campaign from 1941 to 1943 and led, among others, as an officer of the technical service under Rommel , a motor vehicle squadron of the Africa Corps .

After the war he returned to his homeland, settled in the Lower Austrian town of Eichgraben , near the Annuziatakloster am Stein , and devoted himself to the constitution of numerous automotive books. Probably the most well-known book series was published by Pechan Verlag in the Perlen series . Other works by Cavallar were e.g. B. published by Sailer Verlag . In the post-war period, his books were often used by driving schools for the preparation of driving tests.

In 1989 he fell from a garden ladder in his house on Thomasstrasse near Eichgraben. After a few days in hospital, he succumbed to his injuries and was buried on August 3, 1989 in the family grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery. He was married to Dorli von Cavallar, but left no descendants.
