- February 6 : Japan breaks off diplomatic relations with Russia and withdraws its ambassador from Saint Petersburg .

- May 18 : Ion Perdicari's kidnapping in Tangier sparked a crisis between the United States and Morocco .
- August 11 : Battle of Waterberg : German colonial troops under Lothar von Trotha fight in Herero war indigenous Herero who escape to the east.
