The General Slocum burning in the East River
  • June 15 : On the East River in New York, the paddle steamer General Slocum with 1,388 people, mostly of German immigrants, catches fire on board. At least 1,021 people are killed in the disaster. This makes it the worst civil shipping disaster in the USA to date .
  • June 28 : The Danish passenger ship Norge runs into the North Atlantic on a reef in the immediate vicinity of the rocky island Rockall and sinks in 20 minutes. 625 passengers and crew are killed. The sinking of the Norge is the largest shipwreck in the North Atlantic to date.
