Victor Bruns

Victor Bruns (born August 15, 1904 in Ollila ( Grand Duchy of Finland ), today: Solnetschnoje, Kurortni Rajon, Russia ; † December 6, 1996 in Berlin ) was a German bassoonist and composer .

Life

Victor Bruns was born to German parents living in Saint Petersburg in a summer house in Ollila, Karelian . He attended a German school where he got his first piano lessons . After briefly studying natural sciences at the Technical University, in whose student orchestra he played the bassoon, he studied at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory from 1924 to 1927 with Alexander Vasilyev and from 1927 to 1931 composition with Vladimir Shcherbachev . He completed his studies with the 1st Bassoon Concerto, op. 5, which was premiered in 1933 by the Leningrad Philharmonic with him as a soloist . From 1927 until his expulsion from the Soviet Union as a German citizen in 1938, Bruns was 2nd bassoonist at the Leningrad Opera and in the same position from 1940 to 1944 at the Berlin Volksoper . After the building of the Volksoper in 1944 a bomb attack fell victim to the orchestra after was Hirschberg in Silesia laid. There he was drafted into the Wehrmacht , then was taken prisoner by the Soviets and returned to Berlin in December 1945, where he studied composition with Boris Blacher from 1946 to 1949 . From 1946 to 1969 Bruns was 2nd bassoonist in the Staatskapelle Berlin , which premiered many of his works and of which he became an honorary member in 1969. In 1960 he was awarded the GDR Art Prize. The International Double Reed Society (IDRS) made him an honorary member in 1990 . In 1994 he became seriously ill and spent the last two years of his life in a senior citizen's home in Berlin.

Instrumental concerts and chamber music were at the center of his work . He became known to a wide audience with ballet music such as “The Law of the Lord” by Daisy Spies or “New Odyssey” by Albert Burkat .

Victor Bruns' estate is kept in the music department of the Saxon State Library - Dresden State and University Library. It contains compositions totaling 135 catalog numbers (signature Mus.15058-…) and letters, texts, portraits, concert programs and audio documents totaling 24 capsules.
