details

Ship disasters are generally understood to be marine accidents during the operation of a ship , for example due to fire , explosions , water ingress or loss of ship, which lead to exceptionally serious damage events. They are defined on the one hand by the relatively high number of fatalities and on the other hand by exceptionally high levels of environmental pollution .

In terms of numbers, more than 50 (other sources over 100) first and second degree fatalities are referred to as a ship disaster (closed disaster ). Disasters caused by environmental pollution are more difficult to assign because the definition of the damaging event in relation to the marine environment depends on numerous factors, such as the type, quantity and toxicity of the pollutant as well as the sensitivity and worthiness of the affected sea section. As a comparative equivalent, a tanker accident in a bay or an enclosed sea area with 10,000 tons of crude oil can be viewed as a disaster.
