Robert Assmus (born December 25, 1837 in Stuhm ( West Prussia ), † May 30, 1904 in Dießen am Ammersee ) was a German landscape painter and illustrator .

Life

He attended grammar school in Thorn , but with his passion for art he also had lessons from the flower painter Friedrich Wilhelm Völcker († 1870).

After he had just decided to become a painter , the death of his father forced him to become an apprentice in a bookstore, although he continued his literary and artistic training and did a lot of drawing based on models by Alexandre Calame . When he came to Berlin for the first time , the sight of the pictures of Troyon and Carl Friedrich Lessing made a deep impression on him. Before he could devote himself entirely to landscape painting , however, he earned his living with illustrations for the Illustrirte Zeitung , for Die Gartenlaube , the magazine Daheim and other papers.

Only after the war of 1870/71 , in which he took part as an illustrator for the Illustrirte Zeitung , did he settle in Munich and undertake study trips to Northern Italy , the Carpathians , Hungary , the Baltic Sea and Switzerland . Inspired by this, he published the “Alsace-Lorraine” illustrated magnificent work, judged to be “very favorable”.

His landscapes, which have been described as having a "poetic mood, appealing tone and great power of color", include: the "Gemmipassage" , the "Waldsee" , "Motiv bei Stuttgart" , "Karpathendorf" , "Aussee" , "Lorraine landscape" , "Vistula beach" , "Evening mood" , "Windmills in a storm" .
