Title page Volume 1 (1992)

The general artist lexicon (abbreviation AKL ; full title general artist lexicon. The visual artists of all times and peoples ) is a multi-volume artist lexicon . The project started in 1967, the first volume was published in 1983 and since then more than 100 volumes have appeared. The project is still ongoing.

The AKL was planned as the successor to the so-called Thieme-Becker-Vollmer , an artist lexicon that includes 37 volumes that were published between 1907 and 1950. The Thieme-Becker was to be comprehensively expanded and supplemented by the AKL.

In the opinion of Lutz Heusinger, the AKL project is the “largest and most important joint project in international art history”. The publication project has been under the patronage of the Comité International d'Histoire de l'Art since 1987 .

The lexicon contains entries on visual artists from all over the world from antiquity to the present. It includes painters, sculptors, graphic artists, architects, designers, photographers, type artists and artisans. The detailed artist biographies contain information on the training of each artist, their professional career and their works, whereby the main works are extensively recognized and information on exhibitions and extensive bibliographies are offered.

history

The project of the General Artist Lexicon as a revision of Thieme-Becker was initiated in 1967 by EA Seemann publishing house in Leipzig and funded by the government of the GDR. On January 1, 1969, an editorial team with initially 12 employees was founded under the leadership of Günter Meißner as editor-in-chief, including Siegfried Mahn, Renate Böning, Hans Haufe, Eberhard Kasten, Rose Lehmann, the freelance editors Sigrid Trauzeddel and Roswitha Herrmann and the librarian Barbara Stein ; In 1976 the editorial staff was increased to 25 employees. The lexicon was financially supported by the GDR as a prestige project and initially consisted of 30 volumes. Due to the inadequate technical equipment and the limited use of libraries outside the GDR, the first volume was not published until 1983, and two more volumes followed until reunification .

After the Federal Ministry of the Interior had paid a grant of 2,600,000 DM from the Kulturfonds Deutsche Einheit , KG Saur Verlag took over the General Artists Dictionary on April 1, 1991 . The number of editorial staff was reduced from 40 to 12, later increased to 14. KG Saur Verlag reprinted the first three volumes in four volumes in 1992 and continued the company.

KG Saur Verlag has been part of Walter de Gruyter Verlag since 2006 , which continues the lexicon. The De Gruyter publishing house gave up its Leipzig location in 2012 and thus ended the activities of the editorial staff of the General Artists' Lexicon , which consisted of twelve permanent employees. At the beginning of 2011 it became known that an edition plan had been drawn up in cooperation with the Central Institute for Art History in Munich, which restructured the publication of the work.

Andreas Beyer , Bénédicte Savoy and Wolf Tegethoff have been editors of the lexicon since volume 74 (2012) . The editorial team has been headed by Katja Richter since 2012.

The printed version of the work is expected to be completed in 2022.

construction

The general artist lexicon consists of alphabetically arranged volumes from A to Z, plus supplementary volumes, registers by country and artistic professions each for 10 volumes and a manual in five languages.

Sample page of the bio-bibliographical index A – Z , Volume 5, p. 693

The bio-bibliographical index A – Z is also part of the general artist lexicon , which was published in a second expanded and updated edition in 12 volumes from 2007 to 2009. This is not an artist lexicon in the strict sense, but an index to around 320 bibliographical reference works on artists from all over the world. The bio-bibliographic index contains information on approx. 730,000 artists. Only surname, first name, identification of the artistic activity and the dates of life are given for them. Reference to bibliographic sources follows. The index as such should therefore not be cited, but the sources given there. Furthermore, from 2002 to 2003 a bio-bibliographical index according to occupations was published in 13 volumes.

Initially there was also a CD-ROM edition with identical content, but this was discontinued with the 31st edition in December 2009. Today there is a paid online edition of the General Artist Lexicon. International artist database - AKL-IKD , which makes both the entire text of the general artist lexicon and the Thieme-Becker-Vollmer as well as other information only contained in the database accessible.

As part of the project, the following special dictionaries were also created:
