Günter Meissner

Günter Meißner (born July 3, 1936 in Hanover ; † November 19, 2015 ) was a German art historian who became known as the editor-in-chief and publisher of the General Artists' Dictionary.

Life

Günter Meissner studied at the Art History Institute of the Karl Marx University in Leipzig , where he received his degree in 1958 and was with a dissertation on the painter in 1962 Hans Baluschek doctorate . Then he was assistant and senior assistant at the institute.

Since January 1, 1969, he worked for the EA Seemann publishing house in Leipzig on the project of the General Artists' Lexicon and took over the management of the twelve-person editorial team, which in 1976 was increased to 25 employees. The first volume appeared in 1993. He remained editor-in-chief until 1992 and co-editor until his death.

In addition to his work on the Allgemeine Künstlerlexikon , he wrote numerous art history books, including monographs on contemporary painters such as Hans Baluschek, Rudolf Bredow , Max Liebermann and Werner Tübke .

He was part of the GDR travel team .

In 1978 he received the Leipzig City Art Prize .
