- April 27th : The foundation stone for the new building of the British parliament building Palace of Westminster is laid. The previous building was largely destroyed by a major fire in 1834.

- 5th September : The world premiere of the opera Un giorno di regno by Giuseppe Verdi based on the libretto by Felice Romani at La Scala in Milan turns into a fiasco. The play is mercilessly whistled by the audience and immediately removed from the program. Bartolomeo Merelli , the director of La Scala in Milan, immediately terminates the contract with the composer. Verdi, who was present at the premiere, decides never to write an opera again.
- November 17th : The comedy Le verre d'eau ou Les effets et les causes ( The Glass of Water, or: Causes and Effects ) by Eugène Scribe has its world premiere at the Théâtre-Français in Paris.
