John Q. Tufts
John Quincy Tufts (born July 12, 1840 in Aurora , Dearborn County , Indiana , † August 10, 1908 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1877 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .
Career
In 1852, John Tufts moved to Muscatine County , Iowa with his parents . There he attended public schools and then Cornell College at Mount Vernon . Since 1858, Tufts was based in Cedar County , where he worked in agriculture.
Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party . He was a member of the Iowa House of Representatives in 1870, 1872, and 1874 . In 1874 Tufts was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Iowa , where he succeeded Aylett R. Cotton on March 4, 1877 . Since he renounced a further candidacy in 1876, Tufts could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1877 .
After serving in the US House of Representatives, Tufts was an Indian agent in what is now the state of Oklahoma between 1879 and 1887 . There he founded the first Indian police unit in 1880. After serving as an Indian agent, Tufts moved to Los Angeles. There he was chairman of the city council between 1892 and 1896 . John Tufts was married to Susan Shaw Cook since October 10, 1861, with whom he had eleven children. He died in Los Angeles on August 10, 1908.
