John Q. Tufts

John Quincy Tufts (born July 12, 1840 in Aurora , Dearborn County , Indiana , † August 10, 1908 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1877 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1852, John Tufts moved to Muscatine County , Iowa with his parents . There he attended public schools and then Cornell College at Mount Vernon . Since 1858, Tufts was based in Cedar County , where he worked in agriculture.

Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party . He was a member of the Iowa House of Representatives in 1870, 1872, and 1874 . In 1874 Tufts was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Iowa , where he succeeded Aylett R. Cotton on March 4, 1877 . Since he renounced a further candidacy in 1876, Tufts could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1877 .

After serving in the US House of Representatives, Tufts was an Indian agent in what is now the state of Oklahoma between 1879 and 1887 . There he founded the first Indian police unit in 1880. After serving as an Indian agent, Tufts moved to Los Angeles. There he was chairman of the city ​​council between 1892 and 1896 . John Tufts was married to Susan Shaw Cook since October 10, 1861, with whom he had eleven children. He died in Los Angeles on August 10, 1908.
