James William Good
James William Good (* 24. September 1866 in Cedar Rapids , Iowa ; † 18th November 1929 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ), of the Cabinet of President Herbert C. Hoover as Secretary of War belonged .
Career
Good studied law at the University of Michigan and worked as a lawyer before later becoming involved in politics.
He was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1909 to 1921 , where he served as chairman of the House Appropriations Committee from 1917 to 1921 . In 1920 he was re-elected to a seventh session in Congress , but resigned in June 1921. He then worked as a lawyer in Chicago .
In 1928 he supported Herbert Hoover in his application for the presidency. When Hoover came to power in March 1929, he appointed Good to his cabinet as Secretary of War . Good was then ratified by the Senate. He remained in this position for eight months until his sudden death from peritonitis caused by a ruptured appendix. Good died shortly after the stock market crash that caused the Great Depression . His successor as Secretary of War was Patrick Jay Hurley .
