James "Jim" Ross Lightfoot (born September 27, 1938 in Sioux City , Iowa ) is an American politician . Between 1985 and 1997 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jim Lightfoot grew up on a farm near Farragut . Until 1956 he attended Farragut High School . Between 1956 and 1965 he served first actively and then in the reserve in the US Army . He then worked for IBM for a few years . In Tulsa ( Oklahoma ) he also worked briefly as a policeman. Between 1970 and 1976, Lightfoot was in Corsicana ( Texas ) manager of a company that agricultural consumer goods produced. Upon his return to Iowa, he became a broadcaster for the station KMA. He also founded three general stores in southwest Iowa with his wife, Nancy.

Politically, Lightfoot joined the Republican Party of. In 1984 he was in the fifth constituency of Iowa in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC chosen, where he succeeded the in on January 3, 1985 US Senate exchanged Democrat Tom Harkin took. After a few re-elections he was able to represent this district in Congress until January 3, 1993 . He was temporarily chairman of a subcommittee of the budget committee as well as a member of the subcommittee dealing with air transport. During his time in Congress, the 27th Amendment to the Constitution was also passed, stipulating that congressmen's diet increases should not take effect until the legislative period following their passage.

In 1996, Jim Lightfoot declined to run again. Instead, he ran unsuccessfully for governor of Iowa in 1998 . In December 1998 he became Vice President of Forensic Technology Inc. Since 2009 he has been running his own consultancy. He now lives in White Oak (Texas) with his wife, Nancy Harrison, with whom he has four children .
