George M. Curtis
George Martin Curtis (born April 1, 1844 in Oxford , Chenango County , New York , † February 9, 1921 in Clinton , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1899 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .
Career
In 1856, George Curtis and his parents moved to Ogle County , Illinois , where the family settled on a farm near Rochelle . In his new home, Curtis attended public schools and Rock River Seminary in Mount Morris . Between 1863 and 1865 he worked as an employee in Rochelle, and from 1865 to 1867 in Cortland .
In 1867 Curtis moved to Clinton, Iowa. There he worked in wood processing. He was also one of the founders of the City National Bank of Clinton. On September 4, 1872, he married Etta Lewis (1850-1924). They had two sons, George Lewis Curtis and Eugene Judson Curtis. From 1880 he was one of the directors of this bank and from 1890 until his death in 1921 he was its vice-president. Curtis was also on the board of directors of several wood industry companies. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1888 and 1889 he was a member of the Iowa House of Representatives . In 1892 Curtis was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis .
In 1894 Curtis was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the Iowa Second Constituency . There he came on March 4, 1895 to succeed the Democrat Walter I. Hayes , whom he had defeated in the election. After a re-election in 1896, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1899 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 and the associated territorial gains of the United States fell. Independently of this war, Hawaii also came under American administration.
In 1898 Curtis waived another candidacy for Congress and withdrew from politics. He returned to his previous business activities. He died in February 1921 and was buried in Clinton.
