Cynthia Lynne "Cindy" Axne (born April 20, 1965 in Grand Rapids , Michigan ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . Since January 3, 2019, she has represented the 3rd Congressional constituency of the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Family, education and work

Axne was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Shortly thereafter, she moved to West Des Moines , Iowa, with her parents, Terry and Joanne Wadle . There she attended high school . She studied journalism at the University of Iowa and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts . She received her Masters of Business Administration from Northwestern University .

After completing her degree, she worked for the Tribune Company in the areas of strategic planning and leadership development. From 2005 to 2014, she served in a variety of administrative roles for the State of Iowa.

Axne lives in West Des Moines with her husband John and their two sons.

Political career

Axne is a member of the Democratic Party. She ran in her party's primary election for the nomination in the 3rd Congressional constituency of Iowa and prevailed with 57.91% of the votes.

In the main election on November 6, 2018 , she prevailed against incumbent David Young with 49% of the votes cast and almost 5000 votes ahead. She took office as a Member of Parliament on January 3, 2019.

Together with Abby Finkenauer, who was also elected in 2018, Iowa is sending women to the US House of Representatives for the first time with Axne and Finkenauer.
