Today's West Des Moines was elevated to a city in 1893 under the name Valley Junction . This emerged from a small railway settlement, which, however, quickly developed into a regional trade and service center due to its convenient location.
In 1905 the first town hall was built, which also housed the city fire brigade.
In 1938 the city was given the current name West Des Moines to give it a changed image as a suburb of the neighboring city of Des Moines. This should change the character from an industrial city shaken by the economic crisis to a prosperous suburb, which those responsible largely succeeded in doing. In 1943 the public library was opened.
In 1954 a new town hall was opened, which remained in operation until the floods in 1993. From now on, the offices were housed in different buildings until a new administration building was opened in 2002.
