Grimes is located in western central Iowa, in the northwest suburb of Des Moines. The city is about 10 km west of the Des Moines River , a right tributary of the Mississippi .

The place was founded in 1881 and named after James W. Grimes , the 3rd Governor of Iowa. In 1894 Grimes was incorporated as a separate municipality.
