Waterloo is the county seat of Black Hawk County , Iowa , United States with approximately 68,000 inhabitants (2016 estimate, US Census Bureau ). It was the hometown of the five Sullivan brothers who perished in World War II . The city was built on an Indian village .
The city of Waterloo has a city partnership with the central Hessian city of Giessen .

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls "Metropolitan Statistical Area" consists of the Black Hawk , the Bremer and the Grundy Counties . The area had a population of 167,819 in 2010 and 170,015 in 2016.
Waterloo is adjacent to the city of Cedar Falls, home to the University of Northern Iowa . Small suburbs are Evansdale, Hudson and Elk Run Heights.
