Louise "Lou" Henry Hoover (born March 29, 1874 in Waterloo , Iowa , † January 7, 1944 in New York City ) was the wife of US President Herbert Hoover and the First Lady of the United States from March 4, 1929 to March 4, 1933.

Her parents were Florence Ida Ward Henry and Charles Delano Henry. The family first lived in Iowa, but then moved to Whittier , California .

Lou enjoyed riding and hunting, and spoke five languages, including Chinese . In 1894 she attended Stanford University . She was the first American woman to earn a PhD in geology .

Herbert and Lou married on February 10, 1899. They had two sons: Herbert Charles Hoover (born August 4, 1903, † July 9, 1969) and Allan Hoover (born July 17, 1907, † November 4, 1993).

Lou was initially buried in Alta Mesa Cemetery in Palo Alto , California. In 1964, her grave was moved to West Branch, Iowa , where her husband was born and buried.
