Harriet Lane
Harriet Rebecca Lane (born May 9, 1830 in Mercersburg , Pennsylvania , † July 3, 1903 in Narragansett , Rhode Island ) was the niece of US President James Buchanan and, since Buchanan was unmarried, served as the US First Lady from 1857 until 1861. She was the namesake of a gunboat of the Union in the American Civil War , which was destroyed in 1862 off Galveston (Texas).
Harriet Lane was the youngest child of Elliott Tole Lane and Jane Buchanan Lane. The latter died when Lane was nine years old, the father died two years later.
She was buried in Greenmount Cemetery, Baltimore , Maryland .
