Martha Jefferson Randolph
Martha Washington "Patsy" Jefferson Randolph (born September 27, 1772 in Monticello , Colony of Virginia , † October 10, 1836 in Albemarle County , Virginia ) was from 1801 to 1809 the " First Lady " of the United States .
Martha was the daughter of the third US President Thomas Jefferson and his wife Martha (1748–1782). She was named after Martha Washington and raised in Philadelphia and Paris . In 1790 she married her third cousin, Thomas Mann Randolph Jr.
Although she was not married to a US president, she was de facto First Lady of the United States from March 4, 1801 to March 3, 1809, as her father was a widower during his time as president. She was not only his assistant but also a private secretary. Martha had a reputation as an intellectual . Their eighth child, James Madison Randolph , was the first child to be born in the White House in 1806.
