Benjamin Franklin Randolph (born July 14, 1808 on "Edge Hill" near Charlottesville , Virginia , † February 18, 1871 ) was an American farmer , medic , justice of the peace and politician .

Origin and family

Dr. Randolph was the ninth child and third son of Thomas Mann Randolph and Martha Jefferson Randolph , daughter of third US President Thomas Jefferson . On November 13, 1834, he married Sally Champe Carter. The couple had three children: Isaetta (March 24, 1836), Lewis (June 13, 1838) and Robert (April 15, 1851).

Benjamin Franklin Randolph was educated as a child by his mother, sisters and at Mr. Hatch School. He later studied at the University of Virginia , which was founded in 1819 at the instigation of his grandfather Thomas Jefferson. However, when he died on July 4, 1826, Randolph had to break off his studies due to financial difficulties of his family, but came back to this university in 1829 and completed a degree in medicine , which he completed on July 18, 1831. During this time he won three awards as an essay writer. He also became a member of the "Jefferson Society". His professor Robley Dunglison , who was also the personal physician of his grandfather Thomas Jefferson, considered him the best in his class.

Life

After moving several times, he settled in Albemarle County , where he also met his future wife. After marriage with Sally Champe Carter received this from their parents a 642 acres large property located near Monticello (Virginia) was and marginalized by their parents to the property. They called their settlement first "Sharon", and later "Round Top". Randolph was Justice of the Peace from 1846 to 1864 and a member of the Virginia Senate from 1853 to 1856 . He was also otherwise interested in public affairs.

American Civil War

Randolph was a staunch supporter of the secession of the Southern and Confederate States of America during the Civil War . He also helped train volunteer troops . Both his son Lewis and son-in-law served in the Confederate Army .

Last years

In early 1867, Benjamin Franklin Randolph fell seriously ill and did not fully recover. He died on February 18, 1871 and was buried in the cemetery of Christ Church, Glendower, near Keene in Albemarle County.
