Sarah Yorke Jackson

Sarah Yorke Jackson (July 1805 in Philadelphia , † August 23, 1887 in Nashville ) was the daughter-in-law of US President Andrew Jackson . From November 26, 1834 to March 4, 1837, she was considered the unofficial First Lady of the United States.

Life

Sarah was born into a wealthy family. Her father, Peter Yorke, was a captain and successful merchant. He died in 1815. Sarah's mother, Mary Haines Yorke, died in 1820, leaving Sarah and her two sisters. She grew up with two aunts.

She married Andrew Jackson Jr. on November 24, 1831 in Philadelphia. Jackson jr. was an adopted son of President Andrew Jackson. They had five children, Rachel, Andrew, and Samuel of whom reached adulthood. The last two children Thomas and Robert died in childhood.
