Julia Grant
Julia Grant (born January 16, 1826 near St. Louis , † December 14, 1902 in Washington, DC ; born Julia Boggs Dent ) was the wife of Ulysses S. Grant and the First Lady of the United States from 1869 to 1877.
Her parents were Frederick and Ellen Wrenshall Dent. She was born on a plantation near St. Louis.
Julia Dent and Ulysses Grant got engaged in 1844. At that time Grant was a lieutenant in the US Army . Grant took part in the Mexican-American War two years later . The couple married after the end of the war in 1848 and had three sons and a daughter:
- Frederick Dent Grant (1850-1912)
- Ulysses Simpson Grant, Jr., known as "Buck" (1852–1929) - attorney at law.
- Ellen Wrenshall Grant, known as "Nellie" (1855-1922)
- Jesse Root Grant, (1858-1934) - engineer
