Whittier is a city in Los Angeles County in the US state of California , the 2010, around 85,300 inhabitants had. The urban area has a size of 37.9 square kilometers.
Quakers were numerous among the first settlers . They named the place after the poet John Greenleaf Whittier , who also belonged to this religious community. In addition to the place name, Whittier is also a rare American female given name, the meaning of which is so far unknown.
Whittier College is located in Whittier , a private college of the liberal arts founded by the Quakers in 1887 with around 1400 students (2006). Among the Alumni include the former president of the United States Richard Nixon .
Attractions
The historic Southern Pacific Railroad Depot station building - built in 1892 - now houses a railroad museum and community center. A replica of Nixon's first law firm can be viewed in the thematically diverse Whittier Historical Museum . The original was located in the city's architecturally remarkable bank building on Philadelphia Street. In 2003 the Pio Pico State Historic Park reopened after extensive restoration. The area served the eponymous former governor Pío de Jesus Pico (1801-1894) as a ranch.
