Shirley Babashoff
Shirley Frances Babashoff (born January 31, 1957 in Whittier ) is a former American swimmer .
She became Olympic champion in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich and 1976 in Montreal . On the individual routes, however, she was not granted victory at the Olympics, she won the silver medal four times. With eight medals, however, she is one of the most successful swimmers in the history of Olympia. The progress in swimming can also be seen in their times. With her time, which she reached in the Olympic final over 400 m freestyle, she would have won the gold medal in the men 12 years earlier.
She was also able to triumph individually at world championships. She was world champion at the 1975 World Championships over 200 m and 400 m. During her career she set a total of 11 world records. In 1982 she was inducted into the international swimming pool 's hall of fame .
Her brother Jack Babashoff was also a swimmer and won the silver medal in the 100 m freestyle at the 1976 Olympic Games.
