Kathleen Genevieve "Katie" Ledecky (born March 17, 1997 in Washington, DC ) is an American swimmer . With 5 Olympic victories, 15 world championship titles and currently 3 world records, she is considered the best freestyle swimmer today and one of the best swimming athletes of all time.
Career
Katie Ledecky was born in Washington, DC in 1997 to David and Mary Gen Ledecky . Her mother was already active as a swimmer at the University of New Mexico , but did not achieve any notable success or competitions. Her older brother Michael , who attended Harvard College from autumn 2012 , was also an active swimmer. Katie Ledecky accepted an offer from the Stanford University swim team in 2014 . After two successful years, she left the team. Ledecky has been swimming professionally since then, but continues to study psychology at Stanford University.
Swimming since 2003
The young American began her swimming career at the age of six; with her older brother she took part in the Summer League Swim Team . She set various new records in her age group over the course of 2011 and 2012, participating in the United States Olympic Trials , the United States swimming qualification tournament, at the CenturyLink Center Omaha in Omaha , Nebraska , from late June to early July . This was also her first competition in adult sports, after she was previously used exclusively in the youth field.
In the qualification, Ledecky clearly prevailed over 800 m with a time of 8: 19.78 minutes and was more than two seconds ahead of runner-up Kate Ziegler . In Omaha, Ledecky was also third in the 400 m freestyle (4: 05.00 min) and ninth in the 200 m freestyle (1: 58.66 min). Her third place in the 400 m freestyle discipline is the fastest time that a 15- or 16-year-old American woman has ever swum. In doing so, she broke Janet Evans ' record in her national age group , which had been in place for 24 years.
2012 Summer Olympics
At 15, Katie Ledecky was the youngest United States participant in the 2012 Summer Olympics .
At the Olympics she took on August 2 at the heats over 800 meters freestyle in part, came in their group with a time of 8: 23.84 minutes in the first place and had it in the overall behind Rebecca Adlington and Lotte Friis the third fastest time. In the main competition on the following day, the 15-year-old was able to prevail against all the favorites, was on a world record course for most of the race and set a new US record and an all-American record with a time of 8: 14.63 minutes. In doing so, she broke the record of 8: 16.22 minutes that had existed since August 20, 1989 and was set by Janet Evans at the 1989 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Tokyo by almost two seconds. She increased her personal best by five seconds within just one month.
At the time of her Olympics, she was a member of the Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda , Maryland .
At the World Swimming Championships in Barcelona in 2013, she won over 400 m freestyle as well as with world records over 800 m and 1500 m freestyle and gold with the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay.
At the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships 2014 in Gold Coast, she won the 400 m, 800 m and 1500 m freestyle as well as the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay as well as the 200 m freestyle, which she had added to her competition program Gold.
She also dominated the 2015 World Swimming Championships in Kazan over the long freestyle courses, again breaking her own world records in the 800 m and 1500 m freestyle and also surprisingly and tightly against the strong competition for the first time in the 200 m freestyle, swimming on the outside lane prevailed and became world champion. With her fifth gold medal in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay, she became the best swimmer in these championships.
2016 Summer Olympics
After she only achieved silver at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro with the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay, in which she participated for the first time and used it as a swim-in for the subsequent competitions, she won the 200 m Freestyle, each with world records over 400 m and 800 m freestyle and with the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay her next four Olympic gold medals.
At the 2017 World Swimming Championships in Budapest, she won the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay and, as expected, the 400 m and 1500 m freestyle. Over 200 m freestyle also favored, but surprisingly she lost to Federica Pellegrini and only won silver. As expected, she completed her competitions with gold medals in the 800 m freestyle and with the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay.
