Anna Maria Theodora Petra Verstappen married . Janssen (born October 3, 1965 in Rosmalen ) is a former Dutch swimmer . In 1982 she was world champion in the 200 meter freestyle. At the 1984 Olympic Games, she won a silver medal and bronze twice.

Athletic career

Annemarie Verstappen won her first international medal at the 1981 European Swimming Championships in Split. There the Dutch 4-ma-100-meter freestyle relay swam bronze behind the two German relay teams with Annemarie Verstappen, Monique Drost , Wilma van Velsen and Conny van Bentum . Verstappen also took seventh place over 100 meters butterfly, eighth place over 200 meters medley and fourth place with the layer relay made up of Jolanda de Rover , Petra van Staveren , Annemarie Verstappen and Conny van Bentum.

In the following year, Verstappen won silver at the 1982 World Swimming Championships in Guayaquil behind Birgit Meineke from the GDR. Verstappen won over 200 meters in 1: 59.53 minutes ahead of Meineke and Annelies Maas . The freestyle relay with Verstappen, Maas, van Velsen and van Bentum won bronze behind the relay from the GDR and from the United States. The Dutch layer relay, which started with the same line-up as in 1981, took fourth place. For her world title, Annemarie Verstappen was voted Sportswoman of the Year in the Netherlands in 1982 .

At the 1983 European Swimming Championships in Rome, Verstappen competed in five disciplines and won three medals. The 200-meter freestyle relay with Annemarie Verstappen, Jolande van der Meer , Reggie de Jong and Conny van Bentum received bronze behind the two German relays. In the 100 meter freestyle, Verstappen took fourth place. The 100-meter freestyle relay with Annemarie Verstappen, Wilma van Velsen, Elles Voskes and Conny van Bentum won silver behind the relay from the GDR. Verstappen took sixth place over 100 meters butterfly. Finally, the layer relay with Jolanda de Rover, Petra van Staveren, Annemarie Verstappen and Conny van Bentum won silver behind the relay from the GDR.

After the swimmers from the GDR did not take part in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles because of the Olympic boycott , the host country's team won almost all of the gold medals among the swimmers, only the Canadian Anne Ottenbrite and Jolanda de Rover and Petra van Staveren from the Dutch team could each win a gold medal. Verstappen won bronze in the 100 meters freestyle behind the US swimmers Nancy Hogshead and Carrie Steinseifer, who came at the same time . Over 200 meters, Mary Wayte and Cynthia Woodhead from the United States won gold and silver, behind which Verstappen received bronze. The Dutch freestyle relay with Annemarie Verstappen, Elles Voskes, Desi Reijers and Conny Van Bentum came in second behind the Americans. In her fourth start, Verstappen took fourth place over the 100 meter butterfly. The Dutch layer relay with the Olympic champions de Rover and van Staveren as well as Verstappen and Reijers was disqualified in the preliminary run.

At the 1985 European Swimming Championships , Annemarie Verstappen only swam in one final. The 100-meter freestyle relay with Conny van Bentum, Ilse Oegema , Karin Brienesse and Annemarie Verstappen as the final swimmer won bronze behind the two German relays.

At the end of her career, Verstappen took part in the 1986 World Cup in Madrid and reached the finals six times. She finished eighth in the 100 meter freestyle. The 200-meter freestyle relay with Annemarie Verstappen, Jolande van der Meer, Marianne Muis and Conny van Bentum won bronze behind the relays from the GDR and the USA. In the 200 meter freestyle, Verstappen competed as defending champion, but only finished eighth. With Conny van Bentum, Laura Leideritz , Karin Brienesse and Annemarie Verstappen, the 100-meter freestyle relay won bronze behind the GDR and the USA. Also in the layer relay, the relay from the GDR won ahead of the USA and the Dutch women, for which Jolanda de Rover, Petra van Staveren, Conny van Bentum and Annemarie Verstappen competed. At the end of the event, Verstappen finished fifth in the 50 meter freestyle.

Annemarie Verstappen swam her only world record on July 9, 1983 with 25.64 seconds over 50 meters freestyle. In 1994 Annemarie Verstappen's son was born, the future national soccer player Vincent Janssen .
