The 4th World Swimming Championships took place from July 29th to August 8th 1982 in the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil .

The World Swimming Federation (FINA) awarded the event in April 1981 on the sidelines of a conference in Sydney . The application of Guayaquil prevailed in the second ballot with 8: 4 against the candidacy from Montreal . Prior to this, Concord and Santa Clara , both in the United States , had withdrawn their applications due to financial difficulties.

The venues were the Alberto Vallarino stadium (swimming) with a capacity of 10,000 spectators, the Asisclo Garay stadium (synchronized swimming) and the La Pradera stadium (art and high diving).

1122 athletes from 56 nations took part in the world championships.
