Rainer Osselmann

Rainer Osselmann (born July 25, 1960 in Duisburg ) is a former German water polo player .

Osselmann's parents were both Olympic participants, his mother Birgit Klomp as a swimmer, his father Friedhelm Osselmann as a water polo player. Like his father, Rainer Osselmann was also active at ASC Duisburg , with whom he won the cup competition in 1989.

In 1979 Rainer Osselmann made his debut in the German national team, in 1981 he became European champion in Split , and in 1982 the German team took third place at the World Cup in Guayaquil . At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the German water polo players were among the favorites. By winning the bronze medal behind the Yugoslavs and the American hosts, they achieved the only Olympic medal win after 1945.

In 1985 the German team took third place at the European Championships. After finishing sixth at the 1986 World Cup, the team reached fourth place at the 1987 European Championship. The German team also took fourth place at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. In 1989 the German water polo players were European champions in Bonn, with Rainer Osselmann scoring the winning goal against Yugoslavia with a long-range shot against the Yugoslav world-class goalkeeper Alexander Sostar. In total, the striker played in 312 international matches for the German national team.

After quarrels with the association, Osselmann ended his career after the World Cup in Perth in 1991 and so decided not to take part in the Olympics a year later in Barcelona. After that he played for several years with his home club ASC Duisburg in the Bundesliga, where he took over the position of sporting director after his active career in competitive sports. Rainer Osselmann is the managing director of the software company Hammes Software in Duisburg .
