Water polo

At the XXIII. At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles , a men's water polo tournament was held. The venue was the Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool on the grounds of Pepperdine University in Malibu .

competition

In addition to the hosts (USA), the first five teams of the 1982 World Cup (Soviet Union, Hungary, Federal Republic of Germany, the Netherlands, Cuba) qualified directly for the Olympic tournament. The Soviet Union was also the 1980 Olympic champion and reigning world champion, which is why Yugoslavia came seventh in the World Cup. The remaining five starting places were determined from April 13 to 22, 1984 at a tournament in Rome ; Italy, Spain, Australia, Greece and China prevailed. After the Soviet Union, Hungary and Cuba decided to boycott the 1984 Olympic Games, the runners-up moved up to the qualifying tournaments (Canada, Brazil, Japan).

The two best teams of the three groups of four in the preliminary round then played in the final round for places 1 to 6, the third and fourth teams for places 7 to 12 (direct encounters in the preliminary round also counted for the final result).
