At the XXII. At the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow , a water polo competition was held. The venue was the swimming pool in the Luzhniki Olympic Park .

competition

The first six teams of the 1978 World Cup (Italy, Hungary, Yugoslavia, USSR, USA, Romania) qualified directly for the Olympic tournament. For the host USSR, the Federal Republic of Germany moved up in seventh place in the World Cup. However, the Federal Republic and the USA decided not to participate because of the Olympic boycott. The remaining starting places were determined at a qualification tournament that took place from April 28 to May 5, 1980 in Sofia . Spain, Australia, Cuba, the Netherlands and Greece prevailed. For the sixth place Canada, which also joined the boycott, FINA nominated Sweden.

The two best teams of the three groups of four in the preliminary round then played in the final round for places 1 to 6, the third and fourth teams for places 7 to 12.
