competition

The five participating teams each played once against all other teams in a round-robin tournament . The Brazilians stood out in the game against the Germans because of their overly tough style of play. They felt disadvantaged by the Hungarian referee and attacked him after the game. The police had to intervene to protect him. As a result, FINA disqualified the Brazilians and declared their games invalid (marked with * below).
