Olivér Halassy [ ˈoliveːr ˈhɒlɒʃi ] (born July 31, 1909 in Budapest , † September 10, 1946 in Budapest) was a Hungarian swimmer and water polo player .

Halassy was born on July 31, 1909 in the Budapest district of Újpest . He was disabled due to a childhood tram accident that resulted in the severing of his foot and lower leg. Nevertheless, he won the silver medal in the water polo at the 1928 Olympic Games and the gold medal at the 1932 Los Angeles Games and 1936 in Berlin . In addition, he was European swimming champion over 1500 m in 1931.

Halassy was stopped by Soviet soldiers during a taxi ride in Újpest in 1946 and shot together with the driver.

In 1978 he was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame . In 2014 an asteroid was named after him: (238710) Halassy .
