Florian Wellbrock (born August 19, 1997 in Bremen ) is a German swimming athlete . He is world champion in 2019 in the 1500 meter freestyle and 10 km open water swimming .
Career
Wellbrock started swimming at a course at the Tenever -Bad in Bremen. In 2015 he moved from Bremen to SC Magdeburg and attended the sports boarding school there. In 2019 Wellbrock completed an apprenticeship as a real estate agent.
successes
Wellbrock took part in the 2015 World Championships in Kazan and reached fifth place in open water swimming over five kilometers. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , Wellbrock took part in the 1500 meter freestyle competition.
At the Swim Open Stockholm 2018 Wellbrock undercut the 27-year-old German record of Jörg Hoffmann over 1500 meters freestyle in 14: 40.69 minutes by almost ten seconds and at the same time set a world best time for the year. He also broke Christian Kubusch's 2010 German record in the 800 meter freestyle in 7: 46.85 minutes . At the European Championships in Glasgow in 2018 , Wellbrock won the 1500 meter freestyle title with a time of 14: 36.15 minutes again improved the German record by 4.54 seconds.
At the world title competitions in Gwangju , Wellbrock became world champion over ten kilometers in open water on July 16, 2019. After being surprisingly eliminated over 800 meters in the preliminary run, he won his second gold medal in a three-way battle with Mykhailo Romanchuk (Ukraine) and Gregorio Paltrinieri (Italy) on July 28, 2019 over 1500 meters freestyle in 14: 36.54 minutes . Never before had a swimmer won individual gold both in the pool and in the open water at a world championship. He then secured the titles over 400, 800 and 1500 meters freestyle at the German Championships in 2019 . At the German Short Course Championships in 2019 , he set a new German record over 800 meters freestyle in 7: 32.04 minutes.
