Hans Fassnacht

Hans Fassnacht , also Faßnacht , (born November 28, 1950 in Wollenberg ) is a former German swimmer .

Fassnacht swam for the Mannheim swimming club and the Mannheim popular water sports . In his career he set 32 ​​German and 22 European records. He set world records in 1969 over 400 m freestyle (4: 04.0 minutes) and in 1971 over 200 m butterfly (2: 03.3 minutes).

He was German champion twelve times and USA champion twice. At the European Championships in 1970 Fassnacht won six medals: gold in the 200 m, 1500 m and 4 × 200 m freestyle; Silver over 400 m freestyle and 400 m medley as well as with the 4 × 100 m medley relay .

One of his greatest successes was the silver medal with the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay (in the line-up: Klaus Steinbach , Werner Lampe , Hans-Günther Vosseler and Hans Fassnacht) at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich (gold was won by the US relay with the legendary Mark Spitz ). In the individual he was fifth in the 200 m butterfly.

Fassnacht had already gone to California in 1969 to prepare for the Olympic Games in Munich with Don Gambril . He began studying business administration at California State College in Long Beach . After the games, he announced his retirement from competitive sports and finished his studies in the USA. He then worked as a marketing manager for a swimwear company in France. In the mid-1980s he went back to the United States to work for an American swimwear company. He lives in Huntington Beach .

In 1969, 1970 and 1971 he was voted Germany's Sportsman of the Year . In 1992 he was inducted into the hall of fame of international swimming .

For his sporting success he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on November 30, 1970 .
