Frank Busemann (born February 26, 1975 in Recklinghausen ) is a former German athlete who is known for his success in the decathlon and hurdles sprint .
Athletic career
At the age of 16, Busemann began to concentrate on the 110-meter hurdles. The first international successes came with bronze at the U20 European Championships in 1993 and victory at the U20 World Championships the following year. He played his first decathlon in 1994 with 7938 points. In the spring of 1996 Busemann decided to turn to the decathlon because of the lack of prospects in the hurdles.
After a fifth place at the important all- around meeting in Götzis, he won the silver medal behind the American Dan O'Brien at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta . In this competition he not only set his personal best with 8706 points, but he also managed the 110 meter hurdles in 13.47 s, the best ever in this individual discipline within a decathlon - a record that was only achieved on July 23, 2015 was outbid by Damian Warner . For his success at the Olympics, he was voted Sportsman of the Year in Germany.
At the 1997 World Championships in Athens , he achieved the bronze medal behind the Czech Tomáš Dvořák and the Finn Eduard Hämäläinen with 8652 points . At the U23 European Championships in the same year he won gold in the hurdles over 110 meters. At the 1999 World Championships he had to give up in the second discipline due to a muscle injury in his thigh. The preparation for the Olympic Games in Sydney was not free of injuries either. He finished his Olympic competition in seventh place with 8351 points. He had to cancel his participation in the 2001 World Championships due to an injury.
His last decathlon was the all-around meeting in Ratingen in 2001, which he finished second with 8192 points. In June 2003, he announced the end of his sports career. He finished a total of twelve decathlons in his career.
He was trained by his father, Franz Josef Busemann , and Bernd Knut.
