Damian Warner (born November 4, 1989 in London , Ontario ) is a Canadian decathlete .

Career

Warner first drew attention in 2010 with a second place at the Canadian National Championships. In 2011, he exceeded the 8,000 point mark for the first time when he won the Canadian championships. His 8,102 points qualified him for the 2011 World Championships in Daegu , where he reached 18th place with 7832 points. In the following year he defended his national championship title with 8,107 points and improved his personal best by over 300 points at the Summer Olympics in London with 8,442 points, finishing fifth.

In 2013 he won the all- around meeting Götzis for the first time and was third behind Ashton Eaton and Michael Schrader at the World Championships in Moscow with a new personal best of 8512 points .

At the 2014 World Indoor Championships in Sopot , he finished seventh in his first heptathlon with 6129 points. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow , he won the gold medal ahead of Ashley Bryant and Kurt Felix .

At the decathlon in Götzis in 2015, Warner set three new best performances in the individual disciplines, but three invalid attempts in the shot put prevented an increase in his decathlon best. In his gold medal win at the Pan American Games in Toronto , however, he managed this with 8659 points, where he also improved the Canadian record set by Mike Smith in 1996. In addition, he ran during the games on July 23, 2015 with 13.44 s over 110 m hurdles, the best time achieved so far within a decathlon and thus improved Frank Busemann's best from 1996. In the same year he won the 2015 World Championships in Beijing with a new national record of 8695 points the silver medal.

At the 2016 Olympic Games , he finished third behind Ashton Eaton and Kevin Mayer with 8666 points.

At the World Championships in 2017 , he traveled to the retirement of the former world record holder Ashton Eaton as one of the co-favorites. Due to an infection with the norovirus , which affected many athletes at the World Championships, he was unable to reach his full potential, especially on the first day of the competition, and finally came in fifth with 8309 points.

In 2018 he won the silver medal behind Kevin Mayer at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham with a Canadian indoor record of 6343 points. At the Commonwealth Games 2018 he failed three times at his starting height in the pole vault and then ended the competition without placing. In Götzis he improved the national record for a third time with 8795 points.

In 2019 he completed his second best decathlon in Götzis with 8711 points. He ran over 100 meters with 10.12 s, the fastest time ever in a decathlon. At the Pan American Games in Lima, as in 2015, he won the gold medal with 8513 points.
