Athletic performance
The only world record at the World Athletics Championships in Daegu was achieved by the Jamaican 4 x 100 meter relay with Nesta Carter , Michael Frater , Yohan Blake and Usain Bolt with a winning time of 37.04 seconds. Championship records were set by New Zealander Valerie Adams in the shot put , Russian Marija Abakumowa in the javelin throw and Australian Sally Pearson in the 100 meter hurdles . There were also 17 world annual bests, four continental records and 41 national records.
The most successful athlete with four medals was the American Allyson Felix . She won two gold medals in the relay competitions, the silver medal over 400 meters and the bronze medal over 200 meters . Her compatriot Carmelita Jeter followed with victories in the 4-by-100-meter relay and in the 100-meter run as well as a silver medal in the 200-meter run . The Jamaicans Usain Bolt - 200 meters and 4 by 100 meters relay - and Yohan Blake - 100 meters and 4 by 100 meters relay - and the Kenyan Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot 5000 and 10,000 meters each also won two titles . Cheruiyoit was the only athlete who won two gold medals in individual disciplines.
The United States led both the medal and placement tables by a clear margin over the Russian team. Kenya followed in third place . Medals went to athletes from a total of 41 of the 198 participating associations. The host country South Korea came away empty-handed. Only the walkers Kim Hyun-sub and Park Chil-sung achieved places in the top eight. It was the third time, after 1995 (Sweden) and 2001 (Canada) , that the host country failed to win medals at World Athletics Championships.
doping
Like the World Athletics Championships in previous years, these world championships were not spared the problem of doping. Obviously there were still numerous athletes who believed that they could improve their performance through illicit means and at the same time not get caught.
During follow-up checks on doping samples taken during the World Championships, the following three athletes were found doping in July 2012 and banned for two years. They did not open the B sample
- Inna Eftimowa , Bulgaria - 20 km walk , doping with a synthetic growth hormone
- Natalija Tobias , Ukraine - middle distance athlete , doping with synthetic testosterone
- Antonina Jefremowa , Ukraine - sprinter , doping with synthetic testosterone
In the follow-up examinations carried out in 2016, another walker was found to be a doping sinner:
- Olga Kaniskina , Russia . Her world championship title from 2011 was therefore revoked.
Other athletes convicted of doping offenses were:
- Valery Borchin , Russia - 20 km walk
- Vladimir Kanaikin , Russia - 20km walk
- Sergei Bakulin , Russia - 50 km walk
- Julija Saripowa , Russia - 3000 meter obstacle course
- Binnaz Uslu , Turkey - 3000 meter obstacle course
- Andrej Michnewitsch , Belarus - Shot put
- Julija Russanowa , Russia - 800 meter run
- Semoy Hackett , Trinidad and Tobago - 4 x 100 meter relay
- Zalina Marghieva , Moldova - hammer throw
- Marija Abakumowa , Russia - javelin throw
- Tatiana Chernova , Russia - Heptathlon
Of the fourteen convicted doping offenders named here, seven came from Russia , two from Ukraine and one each from Bulgaria , Turkey , Belarus , Trinidad and Tobago and Moldova . This means that the number of doping cases at this World Cup was greater than at any previous World Athletics Championships.
WADA study
According to a study by the University of Tübingen and the Harvard Medical School , at least 30 percent, but on average even between 39.4 and 47.9 percent (average: 43.6) of the athletes in Daegu were under the influence of doping. At the Pan-Arab Games in Doha ( Qatar ) in the same year, an average of 57.1 percent said they had doped in the twelve months prior to the competition.
The results of both events resulted from an anonymous survey among a total of 2167 athletes; at the World Championships there were 1202 athletes, including 65 German. The validity of the randomized answer technique method is scientifically recognized. In addition to the total number of doping athletes, the inefficiency of the doping controls carried out at the time cannot be overlooked, as only a fraction of the doping cases (at the World Championships it was 0.5 percent) were detected.
The scientists had argued for years about the publication of the study commissioned by the world anti-doping agency WADA . The New York Times published parts of the work for the first time in 2013, stating the lower limit of 29 percent of doping athletes. The University of Tübingen had accused the World Athletics Association IAAF of wanting to prevent publication. The President of the German Athletics Association (DLV) Clemens Prokop demanded for a long time that this study be published. A detailed article on the study is published in the journal Sports Medicine .
