Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot (born September 11, 1983 in Keiyo ) is a Kenyan long-distance runner and Olympic champion in the 5000-meter run .

Career

She achieved numerous successes in the junior sector. She won gold in the junior run of the Cross Country World Championships in 2000 and was always in the top five from 1998 to 2002. In 1999 she won bronze in the 3000 meter run of the Junior World Championships. In the 5000-meter run of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , she finished 14th. In 2001 she was Junior African Champion over the same distance and in 2002 third in the Junior World Championships. In 2004 she was eighth on the short distance at the Cross Country World Championships.

In 2005, she withdrew from the competition to complete her school education. In 2006 and 2007 she was eighth at the World Cross Country Championships. On June 15, 2007, she stayed under the old 5000 meter record in the Meseret Defar world record run with 14: 22.51 minutes and is now the second fastest woman of all time over this distance. At the 2007 World Championships in Osaka , she won the silver medal over 5000 meters, again only beaten by Defar.

In 2008 she was fifth at the Beijing Olympic Games in the 5000 meters. She achieved her greatest success in road running at the beginning of 2009 at the World's Best 10K , where she finished Lornah Kiplagat's winning streak in 31:12 minutes . At the 2009 World Championships in Berlin , she won the 5000 meter title on August 22nd in 14: 57.97 minutes. As in 2007, she won the San Silvestre Vallecana at the end of the season .

At the beginning of the 2010 season, she repeated her victory in the World's Best 10K. At the World Indoor Championships in Doha she won silver over 3000 meters, at the African Championships in Nairobi and the Commonwealth Games in Nairobi both gold over 5000 meters, and at the end of the season she won the BOclassic . In 2011 Cheruiyot won the Cross Country World Championships in Punta Umbria and led the Kenyan team to win the Nations Cup. At the 2011 World Championships in Daegu , she won both the 5000 and the 10,000 meters. This made her the only participant to win gold in two individual disciplines.

Her greatest success up to then at the Olympic Games was achieved by Cheruiyot in 2012 in London when she won bronze in the 10,000 meters and ran for silver in the 5000 meter final.

At the 2015 World Championships in Beijing , Cheruiyot won the gold medal over 10,000 meters.

At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , she ran to the silver medal in the 10,000 meter run in 29: 32.53 minutes. With her time she moved up to third place in the all-time world best list, but still remained far behind the winner Almaz Ayana from Ethiopia, who with 29: 17.45 mins the old world record of the Chinese Wang Junxia from 1993 by more than 14 seconds undercut. A week later, Cheruiyot succeeded in taking revenge in the 5000 meter final when she won her first Olympic gold medal in 14: 26.17 minutes and relegated her compatriot Hellen Obiri and Ayana, who was clearly favored in the run-up, to the places. In September she won the half marathon at the Great North Run in 1:07:44 hours.

As of the 2017 season, Cheruiyot focused on road running. In the Lisbon half marathon she came second, just barely beaten by the Ethiopian Mare Dibaba . A month later she made her debut at the London Marathon with fourth place in 2:23:50 h over the marathon distance. After finishing second at the Great North Run in September, she won the Frankfurt Marathon in 2:23:35 hours at the end of October .

At the London Marathon 2018, Cheruiyot ran to victory in a new personal best of 2:18:31 h.

In 2019, the 36-year-old athlete canceled her planned start at the Berlin Marathon . In December, she finished fourth in the Valencia Marathon .
