The Frankfurt Marathon (official name from 2016: Mainova Frankfurt Marathon ) is a marathon that has been held annually in Frankfurt am Main since 1981 . It is the oldest city marathon in Germany and, in terms of the number of finishers, the second largest marathon in Germany. The organizer is the agency motion events . Its managing director, Jo Schindler, is the race director.

history

Five years after the first New York City Marathon , the time in Germany was ripe for marathons in the city centers. In Frankfurt the OSC Hoechst 1960 e. V. started on May 17, 1981, with Hoechst AG as the title sponsor. In the same year the Berlin Marathon and the Rhine-Ruhr Marathon followed .

Although the number of finishers rose from 2588 in the first year to 7297 in 1985, Hoechst withdrew. In 1986 the marathon was canceled. In 1987, the city of Frankfurt as the organizer, with the athletics department of Eintracht Frankfurt as the sporting organizer, brought the race back to life. The date of the event was postponed to October and the exhibition grounds were chosen as the new start and destination .

In 1985, 1994, 1998, 2001, 2015, 2016 and 2017, the German Marathon Championships were held here.

At the German Championships on October 25, 2015, Arne Gabius from Hamburg set a new German record with 2:08:33 hours. He undercut the record held by Jörg Peter since 1988 by 14 seconds.

In 2017 Klemens Wittig set a European record for the men over 80 with 3:39:54 h.

For decades, the runners have been welcomed by the moderator Artur Schmidt shortly before the festival hall.

Routing 2018

The start is on the Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage at the exhibition tower . At Platz der Republik, the route turns left into Mainzer Landstrasse . After circumnavigating the Taunusanlage , it goes back to the start area and the Bockenheimer Warte and then via the Bockenheimer Landstrasse to the Alte Oper . Walk north over Reuterweg and Bremer Straße to the Westend campus of the University of Frankfurt and return to Opernplatz via Eschersheimer Landstraße and Bockenheimer Anlage . Via Junghofstrasse you get to Roßmarkt , then pass the stock exchange and get to Eschenheimer Tor . Past the Eschenheimer Turm , on the Frankfurter Anlagenring to Friedberger Tor , where you turn south and cross the old bridge to Sachsenhausen on the left side of the Main . Parallel to the Main it now goes westward to the districts of Niederrad and Schwanheim . After the only significant ascent of the route to the Schwanheimer Bridge , it goes back to the right bank of the Main and to the westernmost point of the route in Höchst at the Bolongaropalast . Via Nied it now goes east over Mainzer Landstrasse back to the city center . At 34 km, just before the Galluswarte , you walk a loop through the Europaviertel to Platz der Republik. On a lap across Taunusstrasse and Kaiserstrasse , the main guard and the Eschenheimer tower are passed again. From there the last kilometers lead over the Freßgass and along the Alte Oper over the Republic Square to the festival hall , where a red carpet is laid out for the runners.

The unofficial landmark of the route is the Hammering Man in the start and finish area, which reminds marathon runners of the “man with the hammer” who plagues runners with a hunger branch.
