Melanie Kraus (born October 24, 1974 in Mönchengladbach ) is a German long-distance runner and Olympian (2008).
Career
In 1999 she became German champion in the 10,000 meter run . Her best time over this distance comes from the same year (32: 12.40 min, set up in Troisdorf on September 4th). Shortly afterwards, she ran second in the Route du Vin with 1:09:36 h and was the third fastest German in the half marathon up to that point .
On her full-distance debut at the Berlin Marathon 2000 she was fifth in 2:27:58 h. Only Uta Pippig , Katrin Dörre-Heinig and Claudia Dreher had been faster at the national level.
At the 2001 World Athletics Championships marathon in Edmonton, she finished 23rd. In the same year she came second in the Frankfurt Marathon .
After that, injuries kept preventing her from exhausting her performance potential, even if she set a course record in the Essen Marathon Around Baldeneysee in 2004 with 2:34:18 h and a year later came fourth in the Berlin Marathon in 2:34:23 h . In 2006 she won the Bietigheim New Year's Eve run .
At the 2007 Düsseldorf Marathon she made a comeback with a second place and a time of 2:30:38 h, with which she met the qualification standard of the German Athletics Association for the 2007 World Athletics Championships in Osaka. At the marathon in Osaka, she divided her strengths well in difficult external conditions and, at 25 km, finished in 35th place in 2:37:20 h. Almost two months later, she won the Frankfurt Marathon in one time from 2:28:56 h and thus remained well below the Olympic standard of 2:31 hours. It reached number 38 in Beijing.
After her second place in 2007 in Düsseldorf, she won the Düsseldorf Marathon in 2008 in 2:33:36 h.
2008 Summer Olympics
After Irina Mikitenko was injured, Melanie Kraus was the only German starter alongside Susanne Hahn in the marathon of the Olympic Games in Beijing . As in Osaka, she started carefully. In the second half she worked her way up from 63rd place to 38th place and ran into the " bird's nest " after 2:35:17 h .
Melanie Kraus is 1.65 m tall and weighs 48 kg. She has been playing for TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen since 1997 .
